Chapter Fifteen â Hilda & Albert Weller 1947
âCome along Albert, we mustnât miss the train.â
âI donât want to go!â Albert stopped and stamped his foot.
âNow come along Albert, youâre a big boy now youâre nearly five and we must get on.â
Hilda was carrying a large carpet bag her overcoat a handbag and a teddy bear with one eye and was close to losing her temper. They'd been travelling continuously ever since leaving Dover that morning, having arrived on a ferry from France the night before.
âWell, Teddy-One-Eye is going, so I suppose youâll have to say goodbye to him if youâre not coming.â
Albert hung his head and pouted sneaking a suspicious look at Teddy-One-Eye, who he really didnât want to lose.
Hilda reached out a hand, Albert took it reluctantly and still pouting, allowed himself to be led across the busy station concourse to the train. As soon as he saw the brown teak panelled, carriages with gold lettering the crowds of people milling about and the steam coming from the huge apple green and black steam engine, he wanted to see more and pulled at his grandmotherâs hand to try and get closer to the engine. Hilda was still struggling a little to persuade him to board the rain when an army officer who was about to board came across.
âWould you like me to get your bags on board while you take him to see the engine?â He asked.
He was a Colonel, probably in his early sixties, over six feet tall with a florid face and a luxurious moustache.
âActually if you donât mind would you take him to see the engine and Iâll get settled on the train. Iâm in the compartment thereâ, Hilda said pointing to the carriage.
âPleased to Maâamâ, was the Colonelâs genuine reply. âHavenât seen my own grandchild for nearly a year. Whatâs your name young man?â He said to Albert.
Albert seemed to sum up the Colonel for a few seconds with a his lips slightly pursed and decided that he was alright.
âAlbertâ, he replied confidently, âand Iâm nearly five!â
âWell then Albert, would you like to look at the steam engine?â
Albert nodded enthusiastically, took the Colonelâs offered hand and was off down the platform. Hilda smiled after them and then finding their seats, loaded the bags on the overhead netting.
Albert returned a few minutes later still holding the Colonelâs hand. When he saw Hilda he let go and rushed to her.
âGramma, the engine was very big and the smoke smelled funny. The man in the engine waved to me. Jones said I should become an engine driver when I grow up.â He said looking across at the Colonel. âCan I, can I, Gramma?â
âI donât see why not Albert.â
Albert climbed onto the seat next to the window.
âThank you Colonelâ, she hesitated looking steadily into the Colonelâs grey eyes, âJones?â she queried.
âColonel Edward Jones-Sinclair Maâam. At your service.â He nodded his head in a small salute as he said the last few words.
âHilda Weller.â Hilda replied holding out her gloved hand.
